Keyboard Shortcuts & Markdown Input
CyteEditor ships with two sets of typing accelerators: keyboard shortcuts for every toolbar action, and Markdown-style input rules that format your text as you type. Both are built into the core and enabled by default in every framework adapter — no configuration needed.
On macOS, use ⌘ (Cmd) and ⌥ (Option) where Windows and Linux use Ctrl and Alt.

Markdown Input Rules
Type the shortcut and keep writing — the conversion happens instantly.
Blocks (type at the start of a line, then Space)
| Type | You get |
|---|---|
# … ###### + Space | Heading 1–6 |
> + Space | Block quote |
-, *, or + + Space | Bullet list |
1. + Space | Ordered list (typing 3. after a list with two items continues the numbering) |
[ ] + Space | Task list item, unchecked |
[x] + Space | Task list item, checked |
Inline formatting (converted as you type the closing delimiter)
| Type | You get |
|---|---|
**text** or __text__ | Bold |
*text* or _text_ | Italic |
~~text~~ | Strikethrough |
`text` | Inline code |
==text== | Highlight |
Code blocks
- Type
```at the start of a line, optionally followed by a language identifier (for examplejsorpython), then press Space. ~~~works exactly the same way.
Horizontal rules
| Type | You get |
|---|---|
--- | Horizontal rule (converts as soon as you type the third hyphen) |
*** or ___ + Space | Horizontal rule |
Smart paste
- Plain text containing Markdown syntax keeps its formatting when pasted:
**bold**,__bold__,*italic*,_italic_,~~strike~~, and`code`are all converted automatically. - Pasting a bare URL such as
https://example.comturns it into a link.
Notes
- After a Markdown conversion, the caret keeps the formatting: typing continues in bold right after
**bold**, the same as when you click into existing bold text. Press the toolbar button or the shortcut again to switch it off. - Shortcuts and input rules are enabled by default in every framework adapter.
